How to choose a domain

How to choose a suitable domain? Domain is the signal of our website,it helps people to find us. So first of all,we need the domain is easy to rember and identify.

But a commercial website,we can’t only consider the commercial value,we also need to consider the technical value.

1. Domain prefix name part

The prefix is the most important part. Generally speaking, the shorter the length, the better, and it should remind people of your website and the domain name. There’s  several ideas:such as brand name, product feature words, product words or industry words, etc.

Many people have heard that putting the target keywords of the website in the domain name is helpful for SEO, so they have been struggling with whether to put the target keywords. More than ten years ago, it was definitely beneficial because Google gave extra points to keywords in the domain name at that time.

But now,big data technology has made great progress, and Google’s content recognition ability has been greatly improved. The signal effect of keywords in domain names or URLs is actually negligible, so Google will definitely not give a higher score weight to keywords in domain names and URLs, at most one or two points out of 100. Therefore, we don’t need to worry too much about the keywords in the domain name. Ensuring easy identification and memory is the primary goal. Of course, if keywords can be naturally included, it will be icing on the cake.

2. Domain name suffix

.com is the most widely recognized domain name suffix (think about whether you usually end your URL with .com), so it is the first choice for commercial websites. Don’t choose some messy suffixes, such as .inc, .xyz – in the eyes of most people, the first impression may be that this is not a serious website.

Of course, if your industry has a popular domain name suffix, you can choose it. For example, I know: .io is very popular in foreign technology circles, so if your industry has strong technological attributes, you can choose this suffix. Because your website audience has been browsing various technology websites ending with io for a long time, they have gradually reached a consensus that .io is a technology website. Even if they enter the URL incorrectly as xxx.com the first time, they may try xxx.io the second time. And there is another advantage. When you choose a suffix that does not end with .com, the number of prefixes that can be selected will increase greatly, but I don’t recommend using prefixes used by other websites.

Factors Affecting the Technical Value of Domain Names

Before we register the domain,We also need to do a domain name check. The health of the domain name will affect the website’s subsequent access experience, email marketing, SEO ranking, etc.

1.Check if the website is considered malicious by the protection software

After detecting dangerous content on a website, the security guard will mark the website’s domain name, and the next time someone visits this domain name, an alarm will be sounded. Therefore, we also need to check whether our domain name has been blacklisted by foreign antivirus software.

If we get the postive results, then we continue, otherwise,we needs to give up the domain name.

2.Check whether domain name has been blacklisted by the email evaluation agency

An email address with our own domain name as the suffix will make our company and brand more formal and professional, so business websites should try not to use third-party email addresses such as Gmail and Hotmail.

When providing email services, email service providers may use lists of multiple email evaluation agencies to evaluate received emails. If the emails come from a domain mailbox on the blacklist, the emails are likely to be rejected. When our domain name is on the blacklist, the reach rate of emails sent from the domain mailbox will be reduced, especially if it is on multiple blacklists, then the success rate of delivery is very low. In most cases, the emails will be rejected by the other party’s mailbox, or if you are lucky, they will go into the spam folder.

When we purchase a host, we also need to check whether the IP is healthy.

3.Check the website's spam score, DA, and backlinks

Google will punish websites that seriously violate SEO rules and will not include or rank them. Moz has collected millions of these punished websites and summarized 27 common features of these websites through machine learning. For specific features, please check the original text on the official website. They also compiled a spam scoring system based on these features. In simple terms, it is a spam score of the website, with a full score of 100%. The higher the score, the spammier it is. Generally, less than 10% is acceptable.

DA is the abbreviation of Domain Authority, which is also a website authority indicator of Moz, with a full score of 100. Generally speaking, a higher DA is better. If we can register a high DA domain name that has been registered by someone else before, and there are no other bad features, then we will make a lot of money, because this domain name is equivalent to winning at the starting line in terms of SEO.

Backlinks are external links, which refer to links from other websites pointing to our website. Moz is a long-established SEO analysis tool. Although it is outdated now, it is sufficient for the domain name registration stage. We can use it to roughly check the backlinks that it barely recognizes that are related to the domain name we want to register. We click on a few backlinks to check whether those websites look like regular websites and how they are related to the industry we want to do (the higher the relevance, the more related backlinks, and the greater the value of the domain name).Otherwise,we need to give up the domain name.

4.Check the website history and domain age

Our domain name check is to check its background, just like a political review, and we need to check three generations of domain names clearly.

There is a saying that the earlier the domain name is registered, the greater the weight of the search engine. It is very good to find such an old domain name.

Summarize:

When choosing a domain name, you should not only choose a short, easy-to-remember, and recognizable prefix and suffix, but also ensure that all inspection indicators are qualified and achieve high scores in both business and technical scores. Choosing a domain name may seem simple, but it actually plays an important role in the future development of the website and brand, so you still need to think twice before making a decision!
